 Saturday 17th February.

Tired…out last night till LATE - 11.30!!

Went to The Royal Festival Hall with U3A group…Stravinsky & some other Spanish stuff - one being a world premier. To watch it was exciting, also at times sounded like a group of kids had grabbed a load of instruments and just having fun! Won’t be looking out for it again…

But, even if traffic was lousy & we only just got there in time, I LOVE the journey in the coach in & out of the city 😍.

Veg Nest

Moving rapidly..border done and dusted, £20 quids worth of bark chipping…then used the empty bags to collect some from a heap in the carpark :)

More grass lifted from the weed matting - how dare it grown TOP of the matrix !!

More used of weed killer this season, the whole plan is to make it easier!!

Today, compost & farmyard manure bought from Top Pots…

So, one plot prepped & radish sown & covered…manure laid where Suzie’s Christmas Brussels are going in πŸ˜‡…and more free chipping bagged up.

Been away from here again...

I used to enjoy my blog posts...

Looking back it was a form of boring the guys in The Naafi orThe  Malcolm Club ( long gone institutions), sharing without the need to actually chat in person to somebody!! Then your mates just looked at you and said 'aye', on here anybody who could be arsed just scroll past the crap and look at the pics!!

Pretty same on Facebook, which has taken over from this little blog...( here FACEBOOK ) πŸ˜€

I pretty religiously put up logs of my walking, follow loads of strange people in wierd and wonderful groups, such as lost shopping trolleys, The Dull Club, Steps we love, park benches, weather around the world right now...football obviously! Pared down the crap over the years, it works for me..

Then there's Twitter! Been a trifle stressed time on there!!

Politically I'm disctinctly Centre Left, and right now its hard to really come out and say "I'll Vote For Him/Her"..but that's bye the bye, Twitter has gone from a fairly relaxed chatty newsy place to a something resembling The Spanish Inquisition, complete with Heritcal Burnings!!  Again, I've just spent time paring down who, and what I follow...There seems to be none of that middle ground, eg if you have a tendancy to Boris, you must be a raving Trumpite as well, and if you think Biden is right, you're a raving Corbynista, of which I'm neither...I suppose being of the Harold Wilson, Jim Callaghan generation of Labour, well, bring their kind back.

I do find it hard to socialise.

In The RAF it was easy, walk into a Naafi anywhere in the world and you already had a connection, something to chat about, a commonality of cause, be you an airframe fitter or (as I was) a "blanket stacker"...logistics, supply etc... Now, Ive been here for heading towards 20 years(!!!) and I see people I know, but with a couple of exceptions, still haven't a clue as to their job, profession, history etc...in our local Club, there's always the same group in there when I go in, who've been that same group long before me and know each other intimately, I'm always the outsider, and I admit I sit by myself and tend to only add the occasional comment to the conversations - often because its a very parochial and insular conversation !!  Right now Social Distancing suits me!!

The other half of this blog, Suzie, has had a much harder time of it than me. Made redundant just before lockdown, actually on her way to an interview when they pulled the plug as such. A couple of interviews since, always pleasant reviews, but no job. Now no dole, only available for 6 months, so we are relying on my pensions...which I spend at a rapid rate.πŸ˜“.

We've spent more time enclosed together in our little nest than ever - I resented the intrusion for a while - missed my solitary life of seeing Suzie off to work, breakfast, walk, or domestics, or visit Mother, then home after a pint at the above club, sit in big chair, sport on TV nap, prepare evening tea, welcome home the worker...bed!! But we've worked it out - I get up early, she gets up late  :)

Mother has spent nigh on 2/3rds of a year stuck in her little flat, no social life at all - at least we've been out shopping, holiday in Norfolk, gone to pubs etc..she's had nowt, with the odd exception of me twice a week, a visit from Janice for a week or so, odd phone cll from Grandchildren and her friends, who have been the worst at this!!

A rare lunch out...keeping her safe

So, as this second lockdown comes to an end, a vaccine is in sight, what of our future?

Me...going to walk from Westminster to Tower Hill eating and drinking it all back in again...Pepys, Boswell & Johnson, Shardlake...πŸš‚πŸΊπŸ±

Suzie, dancing. Lots and lots and lots of dancing!!πŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒ

Mother, tea, sandwiches and bingo with her friends, before its too late.  She's 93 next moth.

Hightlight of past 8 months...Suzie's birthday feast :)

Ankle Recovery etc...a blog

Okay, I fell, cracked me ankle in 3 places, was looked after exceptionally well by the staff at Stoke Mandeville...
pre op...

She loves me..

I needed to show I love her...

Post op...

Wash...pah, whats one of them...

Still loves me...(even though she cant see out of her gummy eyes!!)

Home...

Look...outside world!!

my new bestest friend...

...now I'm home and for the first time in my life, a proper invalid.  Not someone who is coughing and spluttering with pig flu or man flu or some other idle complaint..

So, lets keep a blog of my recovery ( my..our because I won't recover without the help of Suzie and friends,,,)..

Op #day 1 Sunday 21st January 2018

My first operation, didn't really know what to expect...all very professional, anaesthetist calm and clear...went 'down' at 1240, into anaesthetist room at just about 1 pm, chatting to me...then I woke up!!

No sense of doziness or dizziness before op at all!!  I have a fleeting recall of a short dream by then I just opened my eyes looking at ceiling in the recovery room!!!  Remember looking at clock - 2.45. They must have been waiting for me so they could finish their shift!  Zoomed back to the ward.

My leg below my knee felt like a block of cement - they had put a 'block' in for pain relief, no feeling in nerves for upto 24 hours.

Suzie had stayed at mothers Sat, (they are both unwell!!), so she arrived around 4ish...

still loves me...

Post op #day 2 Monday 22nd January 2018

Although they had mentioned, in passing really, that it would be expected that I would be discharged 24/48 hours after 'The Op', it came as a bit of a culture shock to be told I was going home yesterday ( Monday) ...Suzie had the baby car, no warm clothes for me and I became quite distressed ( and probably depressed) with it all.  But we made it!

Oh, but the pain!!  By the time we arrived at The Nest, I was a tad hurty...

The lovely John and Denice ( who is having to deal with her mum passing away on New Years Day) were here to help me get in the house, which was fun with the Zimmer, in the dark - but as ever Denice is the organised one with torches etc...I have never been so glad to sit down on a sofa with me legs up!!

Emotionally I had gone from shocked, depressed, distressed ( I cried my eyes out at one stage in the afternoons proceedings) to now into organiser mode - all selfish, all aimed at MY comfort..lets put this here, lets do this, put that there...need shopping...SIGH...

End result?

Pizza delivery for tea, J & D are being our shopping buddies and bed is the BEST place in the world..

Post op #day 3 Tuesday 23rd January 2018

Hectic start -
Made a tick list !!  But it worked!

Suzie wasn't TOO late leaving for work, I'm sat here lying, as per the only real instruction from surgery team, with my foot 6 inches high than my heart and i have all my needs for most of the day!!

Pain...was feeling okay at first this morning, then I went to the loo, as soon as I dropped my ankle towards the floor, WHAM!  Blood shot down there and it complained in the LOUDEST possible fashion. I am determined ( being a wimp and all) to keep the pain level well down below my threshold for as much as I can for these first few days, so bed it will be...

Welcome to the office...at least I have a window with a breeze and birdie noises outside!!

Coffee time again and more catch up...☕️

We visited wells Next To Sea...

Sooooo, after my last day at school, we ( Suzie and I that is) buggered off to deepest Norfolk.  Lots of reasons; to make a clean break from leaving, hadn't been there before and not to far away!

And a very pleasant break it was too. Weather couldn't have been kinder, the B & B was perfectly adaquate, brekkies quite peasant, and the local town charming.  As Suzie put it, been there, done it...dont feel the need to rush back!! Pics...

We found Bill and Ollie :))

8 Years...8!!

August 16th - We celebrated eight years as a married couple πŸ˜€  (We also celebrate in March - when we actually met-if I'm correct thats 14 coming up!)  We had a lovely meal in the Salisbury Arms - where we had our wedding Breakfast :)

We've had fun, been to some interesting places over the years...had some great weekends at Joyces and Dr Dix's.  Most of all, been good for each other without any real tension rearing its ugly head :)

Here's to the next ranch of our life together🍾

Yarkshire…October 2015

Up here in Yorkshire for a few days, Mother should have been here as its a bit of circle completing…

Staying with cousin Jen & Bob’s at their new pad ( over the years they seem to have lived in every part of North Yorks and Cleveland!!) here at Liverton Mines.

Why a circle I hear you ask?

St Hilda's 28th July 1949
Well, Liverton is next to Loftus, which is next to Skinningrove, which is where Grandma & Grandad were living  when Dad met Mum…in a railway house.  And where they were married in 1949 at St Hilda’s Church (which is now derelict)…So Skinningrove, Carling How ( where Dad worked after the navy), Brotton et al have special memories for Mother.

When Grandad retired, Grandma and him moved into a downstairs flat in Loftus, which is where i come in !!

My Christening...as I remember them ...
My memories are of a warm kitchen, yorkies, walking down to Skinningrove, marvelling at all the Pigeon Lofts, playing with The Dale family, paddling (even then i recognised that The North Sea is bloody cold ), fishing with Dad.

As I grew, and we moved from Eaglescliffe to Chesham and the trips became holidays and we stayed with Aunty Dorothy in Eaglescliife, or Great Aunt Doris in Whitby, the buses became important. And the trains from Eaglescliife!!

But after Granddad & Grandma died in the mid ‘60s, Loftus became a place we passed through, rather than stopped at.

Over the years, the places we've stayed at have been the various homes of Christine (Rounton and The Pig Farm), Auntie Dorothy (Eaglescliffe and Whitby), Jennifer (Eaglescliffe  - (from where they moved whilst I was bringing a then girlfriend in the RAF for a visit…Peter the Prat going strong), Thornaby, Whitby..at least 3 different addresses  - best 2 being one overlooking Sandsend and a little cottage off Blue Bank)

I DO like Whitby…not sure I could live there full time.

Right, so what ‘ave we been doing this visit.

First, Mother should have been here, idea was to show her J & B’s new abode, but she caught a bug, was told she was very contagious, and had to be quarantined!! Gladly, nothing to do with her op.

Day 1 Saturday- drove up via A1… as it appeared did EVERYBODY else in the south…rammed!  Stopped for brekkie ( well brunch) at Northallerton, then a lovely meander around the Mooors to arrive here sat evening.  PUB - Camerons Strongarm Ale…

Day 2 Sunday - walked the dog with Suzie, down to Skinningrove Beach.  Still cold, still windy, lot less pigeon lofts, looks as if there is a bit more pride in the place ( we have often been to the CHIPPIE on our trips top north, as Mother has memories of it being the BEST CHIPPIE in the western hemisphere - as did I to be true, along with the one at the bottom of Sycamore Road, Yarm…and anywhere else north of Chesham!!)

Early lunch as Stephen and Mandy were paying a visit…which made the day very long! (no, not Stephen and Mandy ...having lunch early!!)

Day 3 Monday - Had a long walk with Roxie…mainly ‘cos we got our selves a tad lost in the wood by the beck!!  Felt good afterwards…Then a trip to Whitby in a bus. A tad different to the old United ones I grew up with!!  Whitby - packed, not a fun place at all now, cant move along Church Street, and Aunt Doris’s Kiln Yard looks very wrong in Blue..oh um, move on…

Day 4 Tuesday - Walked to Guisborough along The Cleveland Street Trail - is also the route of The Ironstone Heritage Walk…nearly gave up at North Skelton, when couldn't find the route, postie pointed me in the right direction and I thoroughly enjoyed it!!  Felt very good at the end…coffee and a beer!

Went out after tea (cooked by my goodself and a bottle of red!!). Intention was to have a drink in the pubs Dad & Mum drank in when they were courting/first married.  Soooo, rang Mum - The Angel said she…Its now ‘The Angel CafΓ© !!  SO, across the road to the Britannia…no ale…Next, The White Horse - here I am in North Yorkshire, their ales…Charlie Wells and Ringwood!! Had a pint of the latter, watched a bit of footie, then moved onto The Golden Lion, which I recall Dad talking about…WOW, strange place!! Very cheap Sam Smiths ale, very cheap. odd, okay, eccentric, customers…left me beer and went back to The Holywell - Camerons Strongarm.

Day 5 Wednesday - Took Roxie out for a last walk - to Skinningrove beach and back up ‘The Lane’ -which was exactly as I recalled - red brick building at the top et al…

My Nappies...My first home...

Another one of those lovely Picture Stories..
